Competition

It's the competition edition reserved for extra virgin olive oils of olives produced in the Countries south of the Equator and takes place on rotation in olive oil producing countries in the Southern Hemisphere.

An international jury is at work, led by Marino Giorgetti, head of the Sol d'Oro panel since its first edition.

There are three categories of the Competition: Extra virgin (in turn divided into light/medium/intense fruity), Monovarietal e Biological.

What is the Sol d'Oro International competition

Sol d'Oro is an olive oil competition organized by veronafiere since 2002, with the aim of valorising the best territorial extra virgin oils of all the producing countries and promoting them on a commercial basis. However, the history of the competition began in the early 90s, with the Golden Lion.

Sol d'Oro Northern Hemisphere takes place in February every year in Verona as a preview of Sol Verona, the international exhibition of extra virgin olive oil and quality agri-food.

Sol Int'l for the promotion of quality extra virgin olive oil in the world

Through collective participation in international events in Hong Kong (Sol Int'l Evo Oil Show at the International Wine & Spirit Fair) and Osaka (Japan – Olive Oil Kansai), Veronafiere offers a privileged showcase to participating producers, thanks to guided tastings, educational sessions on extra virgin olive oil and cooking shows.

The oils awarded with the Sol d'Oro, the Sol d'Argento, the Sol di Bronzo and the Great Mentions can bear a sticker on the bottle certifying the award received.

Every year on the occasion of Sol&Agrifood, the guide Le Stelle del Sol d'Oro - The Winners Guide is created, in Italian and English, with descriptive sheets of the winning oils of the Sol d'Oro Northern Hemisphere and Sol d'Oro Southern Hemisphere International Competitions The guide is distributed to buyers and delegates of Veronafiere around the world and at all stages of Sol International in the most important sector fairs in the Far East. The guide is also available online.

During the days of the Sol&Agrifood event, the winning oils are the protagonists of guided tastings and walk around tastings dedicated to international buyers and of cooking shows with recipes specially designed by chef Giorgione, testimonial of the international quality agri-food exhibition to enhance each type of oil . The list of winning oils and Great Mentions is published on the event website and disseminated through press releases to the Italian and international press.

What is the Golden Sol in the Southern Hemisphere

Sol d'Oro is the most important blind olive oil tasting competition in the world.

Since 2014, the Competition has aimed to highlight the best oil production, promoting it among consumers and operators, presenting typical extra virgin olive oils and their varieties to the general public, especially in relation to geographical origin, and stimulating companies' efforts to continuous improvement of the quality of its products.

The winners of the first three places in each category of Sol D'Oro Southern Hemisphere will have the opportunity to participate in various promotional activities at an international level.

Other promotional activities for Sol D'Oro Southern Hemisphere winning oils include:

Delivery of the “Sol D'Oro Seal”, to be printed in the form of self-adhesive labels and applied to the winning bottles of oil, with the mention “Sol D'Oro International Competition”, according to their distinction (gold, silver, bronze, great mention ).

Favorable conditions for participation in Sol&Agrifood 2023, for all companies that participated in the Sol D'Oro Southern Hemisphere Competition.

The final score of each sample is assigned as the arithmetic mean of the score sheets provided in the method developed by the Technical Manager of the SOL d'Oro Southern Hemisphere Competition.
The first three extra virgin olive oils in each category - delicate fruit, medium fruit, intense fruit - which have obtained the best scores will be awarded respectively:

  • Sol d'Oro – 1st Prize (Gold)
  • Sol d'Argento – 2nd prize (Silver)
  • Bronze Sol – 3rd prize (Bronze)

In each of the three sections, Special Mention diplomas will also be awarded to the first 10 extra virgin olive oil samples that obtain a score equal to or greater than 70/90 from the Tasting Jury.
The " Sol d'Oro Challenge 2020 " Sara
awarded to the company that achieves the highest score with the sum of the points collected by the oils presented in each of the three categories and will be classified as follows:
Sol d'Oro: 10 points
Sol d'Argento: 7 points
Bronze Sol: 5 points
Special mention: 3 points
